A parent was last week infuriated by his primary six son whose English he does not understand. The tailor at Kitintale market in Nakawa, welcomed his son from school and as usual called him to tell him what he had learnt that day.
Sitting down on an old wooden chair, the dad asked his son, “How was school today my boy?” The boy responded, “Oh it was cool dad, real cool.”
“No I don’t mean the weather son, I mean the place and the people,” the father corrected.
“That’s exactly what I mean dad. I found both the school and the students real cool,” the boy repeated.
When he asked about his teacher, Mercy, the boy replied that she too was cool.
Angered by his son’s English and the prolonged laughter from a group of youths who had gathered near his table, the old man furiously warned his son against speaking such stupid language to him.
He also promised to walk to the school the next morning to inquire from the headmaster what English they were teaching primary school pupils these days.
“Bunno buyaye bwenyini,’ he said with anger adding that his son was becoming a thug.
