The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and the Forests Absorbing Carbon dioxide Emissions (FACE) have been awarded certificates for excellence.
The awards are for establishing afforestation projects capable of absorbing carbon dioxide in the air, to reduce global warming.
Dr. Arthur Mugisha, UWA’s executive director says an assessment was made by an international firm in Kibale and Mt. Elgon National Parks, where UWA and FACE have been replanting degraded areas of the parks.
“The certificates indicate that the trees have effective reserves for ‘sinking’ or absorbing carbon dioxide in the next five years, thereby reducing global warming.
Carbon dioxide is one of the greenhouse gases, blamed for global warming as it traps heat escaping from the earth.
“We may also get monetary benefits when ‘carbon trading’ begins under the Kyoto protocol,” says Mugisha.
Under the Kyoto Protocol, emission trading, also referred to as ‘carbon trading’, allows countries and enterprises within countries to trade emissions allowances among themselves.
The Kyoto Protocol is yet to be fully rectified.
