JINJA-BASED veteran driver Dolly Mubarak has come out of retirement to rub shoulders with the new generation of drivers in the Castrol Independence rally this weekend.
Mubarak, who last competed in 1997, bought Dipu Ruparelia’s Toyota Celica ST185 yesterday and immediately entered the rally on his home turf in Busoga.
“I used to battle with great drivers like Sam Sali, Karim Hirji, Jimmy Dean and Chipper Adams. It is a challenge to take on a new generation,” he said of the rally that starts and ends at Sheraton Kampala Hotel on Saturday.
“My fans in Jinja should come in big numbers to support me,” Mubarak told The New Vision.
The veteran is sponsored by Alfa Group of Companies and joins another local hero Ben Koyesiga.
National champion Charlie Lubega was last night drawn to start first, ahead of defending champion Moses Lumala.
The rally got a blow yesterday, with Emma Katto being forced to withdraw after co-driver Busingye Rwabwogo left for an unexpected trip to Belgium last night.
“Emma does not want to drive with another person,” said Rwabwogo who had already finished route reccing.
The rally is sponsored by Castrol Uganda, Sheraton Hotel, DHL, Pepsi, Fire Masters, Jovenna, IT Solutions and Dembe FM
