A lot has been said about graduates who never leave Makerere University. This time, such people have taken the joke too far. There is news of a continuing student who conned two freshers of sh500,000 after promising to get them accommodation.

The incident happened on September 24. In a tearful narration, after realising they had been fleeced, the two male students said they were approached by a “very understanding gentleman” who found them going to Kyoga boys hostel moments after they had reported on Saturday.

“He told us that he was the deputy chief custodian of Nsibirwa hall, and had rooms at subsidised fares.
They added that the man went on to inform them that instead of the normal sh340,000, they would only part with sh250,000 each. they paid the money willingly after he had taken them to the room and given them the key.

Three days down the road, while the freshers were relishing the prospect of being residents at a low cost, a knock on the door changed their whole world. One of the legitimate owners of the room had come to clean his room. On asking the boys about their presence in a room he had applied for last semester, only blank stares greeted him.

They decided to solve the issue with the custodian’s office. It is then that they discovered that they had been conned. Try as they might, they could not identify the man who had conned them among the hall’s staff.

There is suspicion that the continuing student may be in a racket to fleece ignorant freshers of their money. It is not possible to play this kind of trick alone and investigations continue.
