SUNDAY, November 3 is the day that many of Uganda’s leading artists have chosen to hold a fundraising concert in aid of the families of deceased musicians. More often than not, dead musicians are forgotten the moment they are buried. Their families thereafter live as paupers. Their children drop out of school.
This music extravaganza is setting a precedent in Uganda: “We have been thinking about it for some time now. We met and decided that the best way to give a sound memory to our deceased colleagues is to fundraise for their children,” Paul Kafeero, one of the organisers and performers at the show, said.
The show has been dubbed Emyoyo Gyabadukirize. Among the groups to feature are the Nalubaale Theatre Group of Mulindwa Muwonge, Kabuladda Guitar Singers, Bakayimbira Dramactors and Eagles Productions to name a few.
The proceeds of the concert will go the families of Livingstone Kasozi, Umaru Katumba and the late Herman Basudde. Recently, a court injunction attached the property of the late Herman Basudde, which brought more suffering to his family. While still alive, Herman Basudde and Livingstone Kasozi were masters of country music.
“These were our idols. Many of us looked up on them before we became what we are now,” Kafeero said. He explained that it is a shame to see the families of their colleagues in despair, yet these people had so many friends around. “It might not be easy for each of us to pick from his or her pockets and give to the families, but through a concert, we shall give,” he said.
Some of the songs of the deceased will be played during the show. Umaru Katumba made a mark in the early 90s with his Afro beats. One of his songs, Abazadde Ndibaweraki, is expected to be played.
“On top of these, we shall also play our best music. It will be a show to remember,” Kafeero said.Ends
