Iganga –– Over 1,000 people suffering from various eye diseases have received free treatment in Iganga

Over 1,000 people suffering from various eye diseases have received free treatment in Iganga. They are from several districts of Busoga region. A team of 20 doctors participated in the one-week free eye camp organised by Kibuli Muslim Hospital and Sight Savers International. Their head, Dr. Mohamud Elgazzar, said they targeted the needy. Elgazzar appealed to the communities to improve on their hygiene to reduce eye diseases. He said the majority of the beneficiaries were suffering from trachoma and cataracts eye diseases.

–– A team of plastic surgeons from Holland will perform free surgical operations at Nyakibale Hospital in the district from November 24 to 28 2002. They will correct various deformities including cleft lips, spot burn contracted skins and tumours, according to a statement from the Netherlands Embassy. “It would be helpful if clinics and hospitals in the region can be informed through the network of the district commissioner of health services including Mbarara and Ntungamo,” said the release. Nyakibale Hospital is currently screening patients for the operations. The patients must be aged between six months and 20 years. The operation is will be carried out free but patients will meet the cost of their stay in the hospital.
