THE state minister for higher education, Betty Akech, has said plans are underway for the Entebbe Fisheries Training Institute to start degree courses in fisheries.

Akech said this on Friday in a speech read by Entebbe municipality mayor Stephen Kabuye, during a graduation ceremony of 218 students who majored in various disciplines in fisheries.

“My ministry will continue to support all education efforts in fisheries in terms of material and financial support. I will ensure that very soon, bachelors’ degrees in fisheries start in this institute in collaboration with Makerere University,” she said.

Akech said the Government will strengthen the fishing sector by training more professionals to oversee the fishing practices at all levels.

The institute, which opened in 1968, is the only one in the country offering courses in fisheries.

The courses include fishing methods and technology (modern fishing methods), gear technology (use of modern fishing machines), aquaculture (fish farming) plus yatch and boat building (making of modern boats) at the diploma and certificate levels.

Akech castigated the poor fishing methods and called upon professionals to curb the anomaly, which she said was a threat to the economy.

“Uganda loses a lot of money every year due to bad fishing. This spoils our fish markets nationally and internationally and therefore retards the economy,” she said.

She castigated poor practices like harvesting immature fish.
