Kotido district education officer (DEO), Mr. Ongwen Ogwal, has been retired in public interest following the disappearance of over 2,000 corrugated iron sheets given to the district under a Japanese grant, reports Nathan Etengu and Michael Okello.

The iron sheets mysteriously disappeared from the district stores in 2000.

The district service commission chaired by Timothy Namuya made the decision after a series of meetings that ended on October 18.

“In accordance with the authority under the provisions of article 20(1) of the constitution and section 51(1) of the local government Act, 1997, the commission directed that Mr. Ongwen Ogwal be retired in public interest,” Namuya said in a statement.

Namuya was the first Kotido district LC5 chairman from 1989 up to 1992 when David Owili replaced him.

Suspected Karimojong warriors shot dead Owili in August.
The commission said Ongwen Ogwal’s retirement would be effective November 1.

It also demoted the former inspector of schools, Walter Ochero, from the post of senior education officer to that of assistant education officer.

His salary was also slashed.

Ochero, however, said the DSC ruling was unfair.

He said he should not have been punished after the police probe in the matter found him innocent.
