FORMER Electoral Commissioner Robert Kitariko yesterday said he was seeking audience with President Yoweri Museveni over his retirement package amounting to over sh80m.

“I am trying to meet the President. I don’t know when I am going to meet him but I have sought an appointment,” Kitariko told The New Vision on phone yesterday.

Kitariko and five other commissioners, including former EC chairman Hajji Aziz Kasujja, were on July 31 “retired in public interest” for mismanagement and incompetence following investigative reports by the Inspector General of Government.

Kitariko’s lawyer, Francis Bwengye, told the press on August 14 that he had written to the Attorney General (AG) about his client’s intention to sue the Government if he was not paid his full benefits within 45 days.

“I received instructions from Kitariko and I have written to the AG. We are suing for wrongful dismissal and failure to pay terminal benefits. We are demanding sh87m plus,” Bwengye said.

Kitariko yesterday said he was considering going ahead with the suit if it became clear that the Government would not pay him.
