THE Kyabazinga of Busoga, Henry Wako Muloki, has launched the construction of pit latrines in Busoga region, reports Charles Kakamwa.

This is an initiative of the kingdom aimed at improving sanitation to avoid epidemics associated with poor hygiene.

The kingdom’s ministry of health recently secured sh50m from the World Bank to facilitate the construction work and sensitise masses in the five districts of Busoga.

The function took place at Bunya secondary school on Wednesday where a five-stance pit latrine was constructed. Similar pit latrines were constructed in Baitambogwe and Kaluba secondary schools in Mayuge and Iganga districts in the first phase.

Muloki urged the beneficiaries to make appropriate use of the latrines to avoid contracting diseases like cholera.

He said many people who visit hospitals suffer from preventable diseases, saying this had led to increased poverty in the region.

Busoga kingdom minister for health Dr. Ignatius Batwala said the region would not develop with poor sanitation.

“Our people spend a lot of money in hospitals due to diseases caused by unhygienic conditions. So if we are to develop, we should give health and sanitation first priority,” Batwala said.

Phase two of the project will cover Jinja, Bugiri and Kamuli districts. The ministry ordered that all latrines constructed have at least one stance with facilities for people with disabilities.
