CHIEFTAINCY of Military Intelligence boss, Col. Noble Mayombo, yesterday said the army would continue participating in active politics after a new law to reform and regulate it comes into force, reports Hamis Kaheru.
“I disagree with those who say that if the army is to be modern and professional, then it must be apolitical,” he said.
Mayombo, dressed in full military fatigue, was speaking at Makerere Law Society’s annual conference at Makerere University.
He said the army must stay in politics to understand the history of the country, values of democratisation, human rights and the socio-economic dynamics in which it operates.
“I reject the argument that the army should remain in the barracks and discuss issues only in the mess. In the Ugandan mess we discuss nothing but politics,” he said. Ends
