OPERATION Wembley agents have arrested at least 12 suspected gangsters in Mbarara district and recovered seven guns, 104 bullets and a stick grenade.
The gang is suspected to have been operating along the entire western axis, terrorising residents and waylaying travellers on the highways.
On Wednesday, the suspects, who include a retired army sergeant, were transferred to the Wembley head offices in Kampala where they are to be court martialed.
“They have been a problem. We want people in Mbarara to know that their sons are the thugs that terrorise them,” David Magara, the acting Wembley operation commander, said.
He said several raids were conducted in the city in which two gunmen were killed and over 100 suspects rounded up. The thugs were reportedly looking for a car to hire for a robbery mission, which the operatives offered.
Magara asked the public to report cases of misconduct by Wembley operatives. He warned against false allegations by disgruntled persons.
“Where the public is not satisfied with what we are doing, let them report to the Police or to the top Wembley officers. There are people who make us waste a lot of time investigating wrong leads and grudges. We are only interested in robbers and murderers,” he said. Ends
