KAMPALA – The Africa Regional Director of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement arrived on Wednesday to start the implementation of a US$10m development plan in which more youth will be encouraged to join scouting. Maj. Kinuthia Murugu was accompanied by another officer, Gathogo Ngugi.

MPs ask
KAMPALA – A total of 126 prisoners who have been on remand for over a year may be freed soon. The parliamentary legal committee chaired by Adolf Mwesigye (Bunyangabu), on Wednesday said the longest period for remand was 365 days, according to the Constitution. It was discussing the 2000/1 human rights report.

AIDS fight
KAMPALA – Religious leaders have been asked to promote adolescent reproductive health programmes in their churches to reduce the contraction of HIV/AIDS and STDs. The World Health Organisation executive director of family and community health, Prof. Dr. Tomris Turmen, made the call at Kawempe Health Centre yesterday.

Man held
KAMPALA – A Congolese refugee has been remanded on charges of theft. Fundi Lubuku, 28, of Nakulabye, Rubaga division, and others on the run allegedly stole property valued at sh2.5m belonging to a priest. He, however, denied the charges before Makindye Grade Two Magistrate Sabina Piwang and was remanded in Luzira Prisons.
