“I am happy to be in Uganda. It’s my home, thank you,” Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi said yesterday upon arrival at the Entebbe International Airport.

Moi, here on a two-day special farewell visit to Uganda, was acknowledging cheers from diplomats and Ugandan officials who welcomed him.

“Asante, asante sana, nimeshukuru (Kiswahili for, Thank you. I am grateful),” he said.
The 78-year-old Moi, waving his trademark short stick, was accorded a red-carpet welcome.

Host President Yoweri Museveni received him. A 21-gun salute rocked the skies for 10 minutes.

Moi is slated to hand over power after the December 27 presidential elections.

Some diplomats were caught unawares by the first blast, but regained their composure as the gun salute progressed.

Dressed in a black suit and brown shoes, Moi marched to the tune of Miriam Makeba’s Malaika, as he inspected a UPDF guard of honour.

Looking robust and smiling broadly, Moi spoke a mixture of English and Kiswahili. He flew to Entebbe at 3:39pm in his Fokker 70 jet draped in the black, red and green Kenyan flag colours. A Kenyan girl, Turaha Chesoni and a Ugandan, Tracy Kisembo, presented a bouquet of flowers to Moi.

Vice-President Speciosa Kazibwe, the Minister for the Presidency, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, the state minister for regional cooperation, Kahinda Otafiire, and Kenya ambassador Magdalene Wambua were present.

The presidents drove in Museveni’s black open-roof limousine in a 50-vehicle convoy to Kampala.

The leaders acknowledged greetings from the crowds that lined up the highway. They stopped over at Abayita Ababiri, Nkumba, Zana and Kibuye.

Kajjansi motorists shouted: “Uhuru, our man” referring to Uhuru Kenyatta, Moi’s favoured candidate to succeed him.

Moi addresses Parliament today and is expected to say farewell to East African leaders in Arusha, Tanzania, on Saturday.
