The European Investment Bank has released over sh30m to construct a bridge across River Mubuku to link the sub-counties of Maliba and Bughoye in Kasese district.
Kasese district acting chief administrator officer Eseri Ngene said on Tuesday that the Kenya- Maliba bridge would serve over 5,000 people.
“I am supervising the construction work myself so that it does not embarrass us before donors. I also trust the Spencon company which is constructing the bridge,” Ngene said at the site.
She said the bridge would boost agricultural activities and solve the problem of communication that had persisted for several years.
Local councillors and villagers who accompanied Ngene to the site said the bridge had been constructed at a spot along the river where several school children and women had drowned.
The villagers said at least five people drown at the Kyanya crossing point during the rainy season.
The Kasese acting district engineer Byaruhanga Kigame said the bridge would be usable by Christmas.
The Spencon engineer, Ali Membe, said work on the bridge had been difficult due to the current rains and floods. Ends
