THE East African Community has given Uganda and Tanzania only two years to issue national identity cards to their citizens, reports Richard Mutumba.
The leader of the Ugandan members of the East African general assembly, Yona Kanyomozi, told the parliamentary committee on presidential and foreign affairs yesterday that a decision had been taken for the two countries to issue IDs to their nationals before 2005.
Kanyomozi also told the committee chaired by James Nsaba Buturo (Bufumbira East) that the EAC had already approached the relevant authorities, to recognise the East African passports. The documents are not recognised beyond East Africa.
Uganda’s legislators to the East African general assembly met the committee to brief it on its achievements and failures and to present a progressive report of their first year in office. Ends
