THE World Health Organisation (WHO) and National Insurance Corporation (NIC) have injected sh6.5m in the inaugural inter-schools girls cricket tournament due Saturday at Lugogo, Kibuli and Kyambogo ovals.

WHO Country representative, Walker Olodapo and a NIC representative handed over sh4.5m and sh2m cheques respectively to UCA secretary Justine Ligyalingi.

“Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) is grateful to the sponsors for responding to our call. We will definitely go a long way with these packages in place and look forward to a successful inaugural tournament,” said Ligyalingi.

The tournament to run until December 10 will involve students from Kololo SS, Ndejje SS, City High, Gayaza High, Kings College Budo and Makerere College School.

All participants will commute daily from their schools for the game.
National women coach — also tournament coordinator — Junior Kwebiiha said that the tournament would be used for selecting the final national women team.

The selected team will travel to Kenya for the International Cricket Council (ICC) East Africa women tournament December 14-21 to be conducted by regional development Officer Tom Tikolo.

On the fixtures, tournament favourites Gayaza High will take on City High at Kyambogo while Budo will take on Makerere College at Kibuli. Kololo will start with Ndejje SS at Lugogo oval.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Casmjee hailed UCA for its efforts towards developing cricket from the grassroots.

The officer while speaking at the league prize giving ceremony, hailed Wanderers CC for winning the national league and Destroyers for lifting the champion’s cup.

He expressed his gratitude to Castle Lager for sponsoring the league.
