MEMBERS of the Nkore Cultural Trust (NCT), a pro-Obugabe pressure group, have said the Movement Government violated the 1995 constitution by denying Banyankole a king.
NCT chairman James Kahigiriza told the Constitutional Review Commission on Friday that the OboteI Government abolished the institution (Obugabe) illegally.
“Unless the Movement Government allows the Ankole monarchy to function, it would not be different from the Obote Government which abolished it,” Kahigiriza said.
He said Article 246 (5) of the Constitution allows all traditional and cultural leaders existing immediately before it came into force to be recognised.
“According to the law of this country, the institution exists and Prince John Barigye should be recognised as Omugabe and given the regalia and assets which were taken from his father,” Kahigiriza said. Ends
