KENYA and Tanzania once again dominated the East Africa most respected chief executive officer (CEO) and most respected company awards, organised by the Nation Group and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
“Surprisingly, the companies that produced the top CEOs did not get top slots. It is still a more of Tanzania and Kenya party. Maybe Ugandans have something to learn and improve,” a guest who preferred anonymity told The New Vision on Monday night at the Sheraton Kampala.
Manu Chandaria of Comcraft Group, Reginald Mengi of IPP Group and Natwar Gotecha of Tanzania Cigerette Company (TCC) all based in Dar maintained the top three positions.
James Mulwana, who owns a string of businesses in Uganda maintained the fourth position for the second consecutive year. He slipped from the third position he held in the year 2000 during the inaugural year.
East African Breweries and Kenya Airways maintained the top one and two positions respectively in the category of the most respected company. Tanzania Breweries improved its position from fourth last year to number three this year.
Barclays Bank is probably the fastest improving company, from position 12 in the previous year to position four this year, overtaking Standard Chartered Bank who slipped from third to fifth.
In the same category, Uniliver came 8th, MTN Uganda improved its position from 13th last year to 9th this year, Mukwano Industries was 14th, Bamburi Cement (Hima Cement) 15th, Uchumi Supermarkets 24th and Castle Breweries 25th.
Announcing the winners on Monday, PwC Country Leader George Egaddu said that the survey was conducted through an independent research company.
“We aim to create a class companies and CEOs. It is extra special when you earn it by being selected by your fellow business executives,” said Egaddu.
Patrick Bitature of Simba Telecoms was selected in the new category of the Business Leader of the Future. The best in the category was Adan Mohamed the managing director Barclays Bank, Kenya. Ends
