LIKE an executioner going about his work, Patrick Olobo broke little sweat in his straight sets victory over Rwanda’s Dieudone Habiyambere.
Olobo is now the only Ugandan in the semi finals of the ITF/MTN sponsored U-18 East African circuit after compatriots Patrick Ochan and Daniel Ruyange were bundled out by Nigerian opponents.
Ochan lost 6-4 6-3 to Candy Idoko while top seed Lawal Sheshu beat Ruyange 7-6 (7-3) 6-4.
Olobo’s limitless reserves of aggression paid handsomely against eighth-seed Habiyambere,
The first set was tense, the second was a no contest. Olobo and Rwanda’s Habiyambere traded breaks in first but the Ugandan broke again and, at 5-4, held serve to win the set 6-4.
In the second, Olobo mesmerised his opponent with perfect volleys and passing winners before clinching it 6-0. Olobo’s fired an impressive seven aces as opposed to Habiyambere’s three.
Olobo will face Sheshu and Rwanda’s Eric Hagenimana battles Idoko in the semifinals tomorrow at Lugogo Tennis Club. The finals are on Saturday.
Earlier, Ruyange, a quarter finalist in the Kigali leg bowed out to favourite Sheshu but will hardly rue his defeat.
Ruyange put up a brave fight. He lost the tie break 7-3 before falling 6-4.
Elsewhere, the girls’ top seed Tapiwa Marobela of Botswana ejected Uganda’s last hope Janet Namutebi 6-0 6-3.
