RURAL Water and Sanitation (RUWASA) has wound up the second phase of its project after constructing 1,633 boreholes and rehabilitating 177 in nine districts in the eastern region.

The project also protected 1,173 springs, dug 21 shallow wells, constructed 310 tapstands and improved 54,181 household latrines.

The deputy project coordinator, Patrick Okuni, said RUWASA second phase project would officially close on December 15.

He said the second phase project was funded by the Danish Government at sh48.2b while the Uganda Government contributed sh2b.

“Local governments contributed sh740m and the communities contributed sh322.6m,” Okuni said.
He said the Minister for Water, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda and the Danish Ambassador to Uganda, Mr. Bjork Pedersen, will inspect some community facilities before commissioning the two gravity water schemes in Sironko.

“A total of 6,714 school latrines of ten stances, 113 latrines at health centers and rehabilitation of ten-gravity flow were constructed during the phase,” he said.
