UGANDA’s Adam Katumwa clinched the vacant Africa Boxing Union (ABU) super welterweight title at the weekend.
Katumwa’s solid performance against Tanzania’s Ramathan Miyeyasho on Sunday night at Sabrina’s Pub saw him lift the title.
The Ugandan, who improved his record to 8-0-0(4 KOs) failed to live to his promise of a fourth round knockout.
Nevertheless he was in command from the first gong and kept his Tanzanian opponent at bay with stinging shots in round two, three, five, six, ten, eleven and the decisive round.
Miyeyasho, whose record fell to 11-3-2(4 KOs) also failed to take out the East African champion within the three round distance that he had promised.
And for most of the fight he was clinging onto Katumwa, but also had him in trouble in round seven, eight, and nine. The judges scored the fight 99-92, 100-90, 100-90 in favour of Katumwa.
“I am really grateful to my promoters Gobtex International for giving me this opportunity to become an African champion and also to my sponsor Kiggundu Mukasa,” an excited Katumwa said after the fight.
“He was a very unpredictable and was clinging to me and wanted to head butt me on several occasions, so I had to keep him at bay with hard punches onto his head.”
Veteran Deo Wanana won the vacant East Africa welterweight crown with a unanimous points decision against John Nguru that did not go down well with the Kenyan.
A disputed round six knockout by Uganda’s African champion Davis Lusimbo over Kenyan George Owenge was enough for him to win his non-contest fight.
The fights were sponsored by Kampala-based Premium Distillers Limited, the makers of Knockout Waragi and promoted by Gobtex International.
