THE Soroti Police yesterday fired bullets at angry supporters of mayoral candidate Charles William Ekemu, who were shouting insults after the winner, George Egunyu, was announced.

By Kenneth Otim THE Soroti Police yesterday fired bullets at angry supporters of mayoral candidate Charles William Ekemu, who were shouting insults after the winner, George Egunyu, was announced. the returning officer and deputy Chief Administration Officer, Felix Esoku, announced incumbent Egunyu the winner of the Soroti mayoral elections.The supporters who walked out of the Soroti Lukiiko hall after Egunyu was declared the winner said, “We are tired of election rigging by the movement supporters and administrators in Soroti.We kept quiet during the parliamentary elections but this time we are ready to defend our rights.”The police fired bullets at a crowd that had started throwing stones at the administration offices. The crowd later took off to the streets to protest the results.Egunyu polled 4,082 votes and his main rival Ekemu polled 4,064 in all polling centres. When the chief administrative officer George William Omuge, returned to his office after the polls, the angry supporters followed him but were stopped by the district police commander, Patrick Awai.“Awai, you are a Langi and we are Itesot. Don’t interfere in our election process and politics,” the crowd shouted.Ends
