By Samson Opus and Norman KatendeKARIMOJONG worriers face a taste of their might when they line up for the national cross-country championship in Kapchorwa today. In the hilly Elgon mountain ranges, have gathered hundreds of athletes from different districts in the country vying for a common element - to represent the country in the regional cross country March 2 in Kampala among other international events. The Moroto side are making a debut in the Uganda Amateur Athletic Federation (UAAF) event.UAAF publicity secretary Alex Hamala who confirmed Moroto’s maiden entry said over 15 teams are expected in the one-day event.“I think this is going to be a very stiff race,” predicted Hamala.Renowned for endurance, the worriers face seasoned athletes from defending champions Arua, Bombo SS, UPDF, Kakira, Wakiso, Kabale and the home-boys in the high altitude terrain. Sugar-boys Kakira and Arua have been in residential training.World 5000m junior champion Dorcus Inzikuru and Mary Bachia are among those expected to front for Arua’s reign in the senior men and junior women category. After the meet, a team for the Eastern Africa Regional Cross-country will be named, according to UAAF secretary Patrick Okanya. Other forthcoming events include the Nairobi International cross-country on February 23 and IAAF World Cross-country scheduled for March 23-24 in Dublin.UAAF might have organised the meet in this hilly place to tap talent but beyond this will be the athletes’ fight for national pride.“It is expected to be a tough competition mostly from the locals,” said UAAF assistant secretary Beatrice Ayikoru. ends
