On Friday, BAT, MTN and Coca Cola dropped a bombshell — they pulled out of sponsoring the national football league hitherto called Nile Special Super League. Implications: Clubs to lose sh102m in sponsorship from the three corporate bodies.Yesterday, the main sponsors Nile Breweries and Shell also drove down another screw. They are reviewing their support and are to make their position known on Wednesday. Reason: “sponsors are deeply concerned with the steady deterioration of Ugandan football.” That would mean the clubs again lose another sh170m.Nile Breweries complains further of daily crisis in Ugandan soccer and the controversies involving FUFA leadership, crisis meetings between national and club leadership and threats by some clubs to refuse donning sponsor’s kits while others plead poverty.Nile Breweries’ underlying concern in its press release is the question of accountability, integrity and strength of the FUFA leadership. The press highlighted these issues before Denis Obua was returned as FUFA president on December 1, 2001. Delegates were afore warned but they refused to take advice. The season kicked off on Saturday amidst this sad episode. It is time delegates get the bitter truth as the game goes to the dogs.ends
