By Edris KisambiraUP to 600 goats and sheep were bought yesterday at the Uganda Meat Packers by Muslims for sacrifice after today’s Idd Adhuha prayers.Idd Adhuha is a day of sacrifice commemorating an act that was first performed by Abraham when he was about to slaughter his son, Isaac. A sheep was substituted in place of the young boy.The act was later performed by Prophet Muhammed (Peace be Upon Him) to further cement this ritual.Hajji Isa Nsubuga, the chairman of Basajjabalaba Hides and Skins, who is also in charge of the meat packers told The New Vision that as butchers, they don’t register an increase in the number of animals slaughtered on the eve of Idd Adhuha.“It’s a lot better on other celebrated days like Idd el Fitr, Christmas and Easter because people buy more animals and slaughter them on their own. That is why we don’t expect a lot as butchers,” Nsubuga said.Goats were sold at between sh40,000 to sh60,000 while a 30kg sheep was priced at sh75,000. One of the dealers said that they usually sell 100 to 300 goats per day.Meanwhile, the Katikkiro of Buganda, Joseph Ssemwogerere has congratulated Muslims in Buganda on reaching this day.A message addressed to the Mufti, Sheikh Shaban Mubajje, yesterday said Ugandans have to thank Allah for having enabled them make it to this day, especially after voting. It added that the newly-elected leaders would probably come together with religious leaders to uplift the lives of the people. The statement acknowledged Mubajje’s contribution towards uniting and strengthening Islam saying that this has brought hope to Buganda and the whole country. In his message to the Muslims, the deputy Mufti, Sheikh Twaib Mukuye called for unity, love, friendship and cooperation among Muslims and other denominations.Ends
