By Vision ReporterPRESIDENT Museveni on Saturday said the major problem Uganda faces in beef production is animal diseases. Museveni said in a speech read by Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, the Minister for General Duties in the Prime Minister’s Office, that Ugandans had no reason to lament over poverty when the environment is very suitable for beef industry.Kagonyera was speaking at the National Beef Day organised by the Uganda Beef Producers Association (UBPA) at Zziwa Ranchers Farm in Nakasongola.“We have no excuse whatsoever to cry about poverty in Uganda when we have such a good environment for beef production,” Museveni said.“Cholesterol is a major concern to the western world but Ankole cattle have a very low cholesterol content. We can export a lot of our beef and earn plenty of money. Unfortunately because of our bad politics in the past, coupled with an education system that emphasises white collar jobs, we are now in such a mess,” Museveni added. The President, who is the UBPA patron, said the Government was making efforts to eradicate the bottlenecks in the industry so that it can prosper. He said a South African investor has expressed interest in building a modern abattoir so that world class beef products can be processed for local and foreign markets.Ministers John Nasasira, Muruli Mukasa, Kisamba Mugerwa and East Africa Community Secretary General Amanya Mushega attended.Ends
