Student Caned 100 Lashes

THE Police in Rakai on Monday arrested the deputy headmaster of St. Mary’s Ssanje Secondary School, Francis Ssengo, for allegedly caning a student about 100 lashes for indiscipline.

By Eddie SsejjobaTHE Police in Rakai on Monday arrested the deputy headmaster of St. Mary’s Ssanje Secondary School, Francis Ssengo, for allegedly caning a student about 100 lashes for indiscipline.The student, Prossy Naluggya, collapsed after the caning and was rushed to hospital in critical condition.The Regional Police Commander Southern, Benson Oyo Nyeko, told The New Vision Ssengo had been arrested to help with investigations.He said the students, who had gone on a sit- down strike demanding the dismissal of the teacher, were persuaded by authorities to resume classes.“We managed to bring the situation back to normal but we condemn the teacher’s action because it was beyond normal,” the RPC said.The students said Ssengo saw Naluggya talking to a male student and thought they were having an affair.End
