Nebbi District Police Arrest Suspected Cult ‘Bishop’

THE Police on Wednesday arrested the self-styled bishop of a sect suspected to be a cult in Akworo, Nebbi district.

By Steven Candia and Ayiga OndogaTHE Police on Wednesday arrested the self-styled bishop of a sect suspected to be a cult in Akworo, Nebbi district.Petero Reginald Otuga, founder of the sect, fled to DR Congo when the Police raided his camp on March 8.The Police have since established that the Prayer Gospel Church broke away from the Church Of Uganda’s Nebbi Diocese in 1994. Sixteen of Otuga’s followers were arrested during the March 8 raid.Deputy Police spokesman John Kimera yesterday said Otuga was being held at Nebbi Police Station.“The self-styled prophet (Otuga) was arrested on Wednesday at 2:00pm in Nebbi town shortly after he had sneaked in from the Congo to monitor what was happening to his followers,” Kimera said.Kimera said Otuga appeared in the magistrates court yesterday and was charged with managing an unlawful society.Ends
