By Edris KisambiraTHE Government has released sh1b to the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) for the first phase of their tour upcountry.“There is no worry about funds any more. As we speak, we have received enough money to take us through the first phase of our tour of the districts upcountry,” the Commission Secretary,” Dr. Higiro Ssemajege, said.Last year, the Government provided sh602,042,000 to the CRC, which requires a total of sh4,636,488,598, according to budgetary estimates in this financial year. The tour, that starts on Monday, will end in June. It will cover Mpigi, Kayunga, Iganga, Wakiso, Jinja, Luweero, Kamuli Mukono, Rakai, Masaka, Sembabule, Kalangala and Mbarara districts. Semajege said yesterday that the money will cover transport costs, subsistence allowances, accommodation and stationery for commissioners and support staff.Semajege said to speed up the exercise, the commissioners will be divided into three groups of five commissioners each to conduct hearings in the various districts.“We have done this so that we are not caught up by time as we are already behind schedule,” he said. But he said they might not be able to cover northern Uganda due to insecurity there. The commission, headed by Prof. Frederick Ssempebwa, stopped public hearings last October for lack of funds. It started in March 2001 and was supposed to wind up in December this year.Submit your views to the Constitutional Review Commission at: www.enteruganda.com/constitution.Ends
