The Lumbox ancestors’ week started last year when the leaders of Lumumba and Box decided that they would invite all the ancestors’ to encourage closer interaction between students and ancestors. Consequently, on January 13, 2001 the first Lumbox ancestors’ reunion took place and President Museveni was the guest of honour.“We felt that if the ancestors saw the conditions in the halls, they would help out,” reflects Olanya. The President acknowledged the cause of renovating Mary Stuart and Lumumba as a viable project and pledged to renovate the halls. Last year’s event drew 1,000 guests from Rwanda and Uganda. The notables in the Rwanda procession were Kayumba, chief of staff Rwanda patriotic Army (RPA) and Angelic Muganza, Ministry of Culture and Community development in Rwanda. However, the focus this year is to create better links with ancestors. “So we can elect some of them to the Lumbox ancestors council,” he adds. The council will consist of members who will take greater interest in the activities Lumumba and Mary Stuart halls through out the year. “Our long-term goal is that through our successive reunions we will form an ancestors trust. So, that students who graduate from Lumumba and Mary Stuart halls, shall immediately find some innovative activities to indulge in,” says Olanyo. ends
