DAS Challenge rowers take to water

THE four rowers in the long-awaited Mwanza to Munyonyo DAS Challenge began their Lake Victoria once-in-a-lifetime journey at lunchtime yesterday.

BY PHILLIP CORRYTHE four rowers in the long-awaited Mwanza to Munyonyo DAS Challenge began their Lake Victoria once-in-a-lifetime journey at lunchtime yesterday.Rowers David Case, Ken Opitto, Paul Gilks, Paul Spyropolous, his brother Andrew and Mike Kontos began rowing from Mwanza and reports say the crew were nervous, but also excited at the prospect of undertaking such a mammoth task.The four-day challenge is expected to conclude on Saturday at Speke Resort Munyonyo weather permitting.Funds that will be raised in this challenge will go towards the Rhino fund. The six man rowing team will be accompanied by a support team of six people who will be giving the crew back-up in terms of morale, providing food and emergency services in case of any calamities that might occur on the waters of Lake Victoria.The gruelling challenge is primarily sponsored by DAS Air and other sponsors Sudhir Ruparelia, Crane Bank, Kabira Country Club, Speke Resort and Country lodge. Forty other companies sponsored the event in kind. ends
