Apac District Resident Commissioner, Drani Dradriga has attributed the increasing violation of human rights to weaknesses of the civil society and manipulations by ‘greedy’ politicians, reports Robert Kanusu. Dradriga was speaking recently at the closure of a two-day awareness course on the protection and promotion of human rights in the community held at Apac district headquarters. It was organised by the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC).He said weaknesses of institutions like the Police, the Church and the Judiciary had increased contributed to the violation of people’s rights. He accused past regimes of state-inspired human rights violation through organs like the State Research Bureau during the dictatorial regime of Idi Amin. “We should be proud of the existing peace and harmony provided by the Movement government especially for the people in Northern Uganda and condemn those barbaric regimes,” dradriga added. He said the increasing violence in elections were engineered by greedy politicians due to poverty, corruption and low education. But the UHRC commissioner, Constantine Karushoke who presided over the symposium urged the NGOs and the community leaders to support their activities in the northern part. Karushoke also announced a new strategy of empowering the civil society and the cultural leaders to safe guard human rights in the country.Ends
