By John EremuADMISSIONS to the traditional top-performing schools in the Central region has remained stiff despite decline in overall performance in the 2001 ‘O’ Level examinations.Mt St. Mary’s College Namagunga displaced St. Mary’s College Kisubi as the most competitive school.Namagunga admitted only students with up to aggregate 13 in the best eight subjects, up from last year’s 15.The headmistress, Sr. Justin Paul, said only two students with aggregate 13 were taken. “Otherwise, we could as well say we stopped at aggregate 12,” she told The New Vision during the senior five selection exercise that opened at Kyambogo University yesterday.Although the selection hall was out of bounds to parents, many of them beat security and entered the venue to plead for vacancies.A total of 103,262 candidates did the 2001 ‘O’ Level examinations but the 271 government-aided ‘A’ Level schools will only admit 22,575 students and private schools a similar number.The 45 Primary Teacher Colleges will take 7,380 and the 37 technical institutes another 4,580, leaving at least 46,000 stranded.Kisubi, which last year admitted students with a minimum of aggregate 14 in eight subjects, is this year at par with Namilyango and Nabisunsa which stopped at 16.Kibuli tightened the entry points for boys from last year’s 16 to 15 but retained the cut-off for girls at 17.The cut-off for the other schools were as follows: Ntare 20, Mengo and Mary Hill 22, Mwiri 23, Jinja College and Bweranyangi 25, Kiira College Butiki 26, Iganga SS 28, Teso College and Kitante Hill 29.Old Kampala stopped at 31, Tororo Girls, Muntuyera High and St. Joseph’s Layibi 33.Kako, Kigezi College Butobere and Kabalega stopped at 34, St. Peter’s College Tororo 35, Manjasi High 37, Ibanda SS 38, St. Charles Lwanga Koboko 40, Lango College 42 and Kololo SS 42, Jinja SS and Sir Samuel Baker 45 and St. Catherine Lira 47.
