KIIRA College Butiki proved to be the academic giant in the eastern region in last year’s ‘A’ level national examinations after leading in both Arts and Science subjects

By Abubaker Mukose in Jinja KIIRA College Butiki proved to be the academic giant in the eastern region in last year’s ‘A’ level national examinations after leading in both Arts and Science subjectsThe school, located in Jinja district, registered seven out of the 10 best students in the district and eastern region. It far outbeat academic giant, Busoga College Mwiri. Isaac Tibasiima, the best candidate in the dirstrict, scored 2ABAA. He was followed by Paul Kibuuka with 3AAAB, while Harold Obiga, came third with 4ABAA.Teachers’ faces lit up with smiles on receiving the good news. “It is a good thing to be part of a team that performs,” said Ms. Mariam Naleba, a teacher at the school.Like the biblical saying, “Jesus carried his own cross to the end,” Tibasiima also maintained his scores to the end by making a total duplication of his mocks results. He scored 2BAAA in his subject combination of History, Economics, Divinity and Literature (HEDL).Tibasiima, who sat his ‘O’ levels at the same school, scored Aggregate 14 in the best eight subjects. Mr. Daudi H. Mulongo, the headteacher attributes the good performance to teamwork amongst the teaching staff.“We have been setting targets geared at motivation of teachers because the way you handle knowledge workers determine the performance of students,” Mulongo says.He notes that treating staff with respect and fairness has a phenomenal effect on the out-come. Mulongo said the school has also endeavoured to motivate student by putting up bench-marks like the introduction of the small scholarship scheme targeting bright students.“It is good news for the end of the week. I am very pleased with his performance,” Obiga Kania said, on hearing the good news of excellent performance by his son Harold Obiga.He said, Obiga has always been among the top ten since his Primary education adding that his performance was expected of him. Yorobwam Okulu also led the science lot in Jinja with BAAD. in his subject combination of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. ends
