Kampala residents will soon have to pay for the disposal of their garbage, the city council senior public relations officer, Simon Muhumuza, has said.Catherine Ntabadde reports that Kampala City Council (KCC) has put in place a bylaw providing for mandatory payment of garbage collection fees.Under the new arrangement, KCC will contract private companies to collect garbage from residences and business premises. The companies will also collect a uniform fee to be set by KCC.Muhumuza told The New Vision on Tuesday that the five divisions of Kampala had been demarcated into garbage collection zones for easy management of the new initiative.“People should know that we have a law which governs the collection of garbage in the city. This new system will reduce garbage accumulation. Everyone in Kampala will soon start paying for their garbage,” he said. However, Muhumuza, said KCC would continue to collect garbage in places where people can’t afford the fees especially the low-income earners in the slum areas.Ends
