THE loser of Nakasongola constituency parliamentary seat has asked court to nullify the elections in which the state minister for security, Muruli Mukasa, was elected.

By Solomon MuyitaTHE loser of Nakasongola constituency parliamentary seat has asked court to nullify the elections in which the state minister for security, Muruli Mukasa, was elected.Peter Nyombi, an advocate, through his lawyer, McDusman Kabega, yesterday described the June 2001 parliamentary elections in the constituency as a sham, saying it was poorly conducted.While winding-up Nyombi’s final submissions in the petition, Kabega accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of not carrying out its duties as mandated in the Constitution.“The first respondent (Muruli) committed several offences in the elections, but the second responded (EC) was simply looking on,” Justice Gideon Tinyinondi, presiding over the case heard.“They (EC) failed to monitor the voter’s register, issuance of voter’s cards, and protecting the votes,” Kabega said.Court heard that members of the security forces who were supposed to ensure the interests of a free and fair election turned into violators of the process.Ends
