Police Kill 66 Thugs, Recover 131 Guns

A TOTAL of 66 notorious armed thugs have been “put out of action” and 131 arms recovered in the last six months, internal affairs minister Eriya Kategaya told Parliament on Tuesday.

By Hamis Kaheruand Joyce NamutebiA TOTAL of 66 notorious armed thugs have been “put out of action” and 131 arms recovered in the last six months, internal affairs minister Eriya Kategaya told Parliament on Tuesday.He identified 15 of the thugs killed as Bob Weswera Suata, Emma Mwesigye, alias Bahati, Abbas Kaddu, alias Charles Bahati, Moses Bakutema, alias Musana, Chris William Seruyange, alias Bongole, and Francis Ssekiziyivu, alias Najoro.Others were Munyoro, Kayanja, Kananura, Steven Ntege, Muhammad Kakooza, Juma Lumala, Kiberu, Joseph Balikuddembe and John Kakumba.Kategaya, who is First Deputy Premier, said in a statement that 24 thugs were killed in June and 16 in May. Seven other thugs were killed in April, four in May, six in February and another six in January.Kategaya said 131 guns and 3,338 bullets were recovered from thugs this year, most of them in the last three months.Among the arms recovered were 89 sub-machineguns, 10 pistols and stick grenades.Kategaya’s statement was prompted by concerns from MPs over the recent spate of armed robberies and murders of businessmen in Kampala and other areas.He said measures being taken to improve the security situation included documentation of all arms in the country.Ends
