By Esther Mukyala in JinjaJINJA District has given sh9m to 20 primary schools under the school performance awards. The Ministry of Education and Sports has introduced this programme as a measure to encourage improvement in academic performance and sustainability of the UPE programme. The schools that benefited had performed excellently in the areas of transparency, accountability and record-keeping and promotion of the girl-child education respectively.Jinja RDC Deo Kayongo handed over the cheques to the head-teachers of those schools at Nakanyonyi primary school on Thursday. Mr Abraham Were, the District Education Officer (DEO), revealed that this programme is to run annually. However, he observed that transparency and accountability was lacking in most primary schools. Kayongo urged head-teachers and the school management committees to ensure that all the funds that they receive are used properly. He said he would not tolerate teachers who frustrate Government programmes and warned that the salaries of teachers who dodge classes would be slashed. The RDC thanked the Education Ministry for the innovation and said it would go along way in ensuring improvement in the academic performance in primary schools.Ends
