By Steven CandiaMORE than sh2.5b was robbed countrywide in June alone, the Police said on Monday.The director of the CID, Elizabeth Kutesa, told a press conference at the CID headquarters that the Police had recovered sh452m.Kutesa said there was a reduction in crime in the first half of the year compared to last year.“A total of 15,791 criminal cases were reported between January and August 2002 compared to 16,274 in 2001,†she said.Kutesa was flanked by her deputy, Okoth Ochola, acting commissioner in-charge of crime, Edison Mbiringi, and the acting commissioner in-charge of administration, Julius Shalita. She said 5,206 cases were reported in January, 5,060 in February and 5,445 cases in March. However, most of the crimes were committed in Kampala where 3,444 cases were reported.She said there was an increase in international money laundering and trafficking and warned the public to be on the look out for the fraudsters.She said between January and August Police recovered 20 stolen vehicles. Kutesa also said in the same period, nine people were deported. She said five other extradition cases were pending.Ends
