Members of Parliament (MPS) have hailed President Yoweri Museveni’s directive to withdraw immediately the remaining UPDF soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo.Joyce Namutebi writes that a cross section of MPs told The New Vision that the move was what Parliament had wanted for a long time. The Army Commander, Maj. Gen. James Kazini, over the weekend ordered the Mbarara-based 2nd Division chief, Col. Potel Kivuma, to effect the withdrawal.Tarsis Kabwegyere (Igara West) said, “The signs are good in the region. Forces of peace are getting stronger.”Dr. Sam Lyomoki (Workers) said the politicians did not show nationalism on having Uganda’s troops in Congo and Sudan. He said debate on the subject was not objective.John Ken Lukyamuzi (Rubaga South) welcomed the move, saying the President should brief Parliament on what he is saying. He urged MPs to support a motion he is moving soon in the House, urging the Government to talk peace with the rebels.Madada Kyebakoze (Bbale) said Museveni should be commended.Patrick Musisi (Busiro South) said, “I can’t believe its him (Museveni) ordering. This is an indication that our going to Congo had nothing to do with the security of our country if the UPDF are removed summarily.”Ends
