By Emmanuel MulondoTHE women in Kabarole have pledged support for the proposal in the Domestic Relations Bill requiring polygamous men to seek the consent of their first wives before marrying others. The women were speaking during a consultative meeting organised by Uganda Women’s Network (UWONET) in Fort Portal. The women said such consent would take into account the family’s economic situation. However, men at the meeting called the proposal a redundant one that cannot be enforced. Sheila Kawamara, an East African Community legislator and UWONET member emphasised the need for the law to safeguard the matrimonial home property against monopoly by any of the spouses. She emphasised the need for women to have a stake in the land on which the matrimonial home is built. Kawamara urged women to register their property in their own names.Ends
