Col. Kayanja’s Operation Wembley stormed the east two days ago, killing a suspected robber and arresting several other suspects who included a UPDF soldier.

Karim Bogere from Kasokoso, Iganga town, was killed in a gun battle with Wembley operatives in Wairaka near Jinja town, where Kayanja’s men had trailed the robbers after a tip-off on Monday. Bogere’s colleague, Emmanuel Baligeya, surrendered.

Wairaka has reportedly been used as the thugs’ operations base.

Jinja CID chief Hillary Odoch said the two told Wembley men that they had a gun in Kakira sugar plantation.

“On reaching the place where they kept their gun, Bogere picked it and immediately opened fire at the Wembley operatives but he was overpowered and killed as he edged towards the main highway,” Odoch said.

He said the arrest followed a foiled robbery in the area on Sunday night. “The spot had become dangerous,” Odoch said.

Meanwhile, three other suspected robbers, including a UPDF soldier, were netted on Sunday from Namakwekwe and Musoto in Mbale.

Operation Wembley also recovered a gun with 26 bullets and an assortment of goods believed to have been stolen.

The Police identified the suspects as Pte. Mubiru and Nasur Wamayi of Namakwekwe and Hussein Luganda of Musota. A student of Mbale Modern Secondary School fled his residence at Sironko cell, Malukhu Ward when he saw Kayanja’s men approaching. Expensive property was recovered from his residence as well as from his uncle’s house.

Wembley officer Lt. Siraje Lubwama said the thugs were suspected to be behind a spate of armed robberies in which three supermarkets were attacked many times.

One of the supermarkets is said to have closed after the thugs repeatedly robbed it.

He also said the suspects are believed to have been behind the sh20m robbery at Mbale Coca-Cola depot.
