THE Reform Agenda yesterday criticised Uganda Women Network (UWONET) for demonstrating in support of a Nigerian woman who was sentenced to death for adultery, while ignoring the plight of Ugandan women.

Hamis Kaheru reports that the group that spearheaded Col. Kizza Besigye’s 2001 presidential campaign, said they were “surprised and disappointed†that UWONET and other human rights groups failed to ask a single question about Alice Nakyanzi Kafoda, a Ugandan woman who was allegedly tortured by security operatives and died recently in hospital.
The group said Nakyanzi was picked up by the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) for the second time from Ntungamo, detained in an ungazetted prison (safe house), tortured for almost three months and dropped at Mbarara Hospital at night while in coma.
“Why did these distinguished and empowered women who care for human rights not demonstrate? We urge all Ugandans that charity begins at home. Let us sort out our own house first before we tell Nigerians how to manage theirs,†Njuba, the group’s leader, said.
He said Nakyanzi’s death, like that of Patrick Manenero of Kabale, was part of the torture of their supporters. Njuba said on September 2, Stephen Mukama of Kajjansi was arrested at 2:00am and his whereabouts were still unknown.
