Indonesia businessmen are set to invest and join their counterparts in Uganda to exploit the AGOA, the Great Lakes and World Trade Organisation trade opportunities, writes Titus Kakembo.
“We are implementing the IMF reforms of the baking sector, effecting a transition to a popularly elected government and putting in place policies to attract foreign investors, if we are to boost the economy in the next three years,” said Indonesian ambassador to Kenya, Tupuk Sutrisno.
Sutrisno was speaking at a reception to introduce Abid M. Alarm as the honourary consul in Uganda at the Sheraton Kampala Hotelat recently.
“Indonesia is in the process of boosting its economy, democratising and observance of human rights. Uganda should join us as we draw a new business map,” Sutrisno said.
Alarm said Indonesia boasts of a big market of 228 million people, a wide range of technical skills, and fabrics that Uganda could import.
“We will soon have trade delegations from either country to identify existing trade potentials in agriculture, industry and services. Indonesia is one of the favourite tourists destinations because of the low costs and a diversity of amazing attractions,” Alarm said.
Kidu Makubuya, the Minister of Education and Sports, said Uganda was interested in emulating the economic strides made by the Asian tigers.
“We could have joint ventures to have either economies benefit,” says Makubuya. Ends
