THE United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will continue providing humanitarian assistance to northern Uganda, the UNDP country representative, Daouda Toure, has said.
“We are committed to fully supporting these people to help them alleviate their suffering,” Toure said, while briefing journalists about the UN peace week at Makerere University on Friday, during celebrations to mark the global peace games.
Toure’s statement comes three weeks after the World Food programme suspended food aid to Kitgum district after a suspected LRA attack on its convoy. One of the WFP truck drivers was killed in the Saturday September 14 attack on the Lira- Kitgum road.
At the ceremony attended by SOS board member Angelina Wapakhabulo, Toure signed the UN manifesto for peace that will be presented to the UN secretary general to show young people’s commitment to promoting world peace.
Toure said the region was currently depending on 90% relief aid provided by UN and other humanitarian agencies since the rebel attacks escalated earlier this year.
He said there was a need to implement development programmes alonside solutions for peace. Ends
