More than 300 homesteads and 16 primary schools in Busiu sub-county, Mbale district were on Sunday destroyed in a storm.
The storm also killed livestock and destroyed crops in Bugobero, Bubutu, Sibanga, Bukhiende, Busoba, and Bungokho sub-counties.
Busiu LC5 councillor Masika Watenyeri said most families were displaced.
He said there was need for food and household items to assist the affected people.
“Some people are living under trees while others have sought refuge with relatives whose homes survived the destruction,” Watenyeri said.
“Many pupils are no longer going to school because they have no structures to study from,” Watenyeri said.
He appealed to the Ministry for disaster preparedness and other relief agencies to aid the affected families.
“If this is the beginning of the much talked of El-Nino, then we have already received our share,” Watenyeri said.
The Mbale LC5 chairman, Bernard Mujasi Masaba, said most school structures destroyed were old buildings. He said Bubulo West constituency was the most affected. Ends
