The Sheraton Kampala Hotel has launched the ISO 9001-2000-quality management system programme, making it the first hotel in Uganda to undertake the standards programme.
The training programme to be undertaken by total quality management (TQM) was launched at the hotel on Friday by the TQM executive director, Mr. Pandey, at a ceremony attended by the hotel’s managers.
Speaking during the launch, Julius Bagonza, special projects manager for the Apollo Hotel Corporation, said that the ISO series were the most important quality standard tool, because they control quality, save money and improve on customer confidence.
“This makes it the first hotel in Africa to undertake the programme and there are very few in the world that have undertaken it,” he said. “It is a challenge to us, but also a great marketing tool,” he added
ISO series apply to all types of organisations regardless of size and are intended to facilitate international trade among other things, because they provide standards acceptable everywhere.
“With ISO certification, we will among other things be able to meet customer and domestic demands, promote and standardise best practices, build teamwork, motivation, increase company productivity and consistent control of key processes,” Bagonza said.
Ian Burgess, acting general manager said ISO is was a strategic initiative.
“The guest comes first and must get quality. When we complete renovations, we will have a high quality product. Therefore, we must have quality services too when we launch,” he said.
