Three UPDF soldiers yesterday appeared before the General Court-Martial on charges of terrorism, desertion of the forces and illegal possession of firearms.
Solomon Muyita reports that the soilders were charged with nine civilians.
The group, part of the over 450 suspects arrested by Operation Wembley, appeared before the court chaired by Lt. Gen. Elly Tumwine, at Makindye, Kampala.
This brings the number of the suspects charged to 64 in just four court sittings.
The soldiers are Cpl Patrick Olupot, 33, attached to Bombo barracks, David Omalunga of the 43rd Battalion in Gulu and Joseph Cheptegeyi of the 61st Battalion.
The prosecution alleged that Omalunga and Cheptegeyi deserted their military units in July 2002, ‘with no intention of coming back.’
Cheptengeyi was allegedly found selling off his gun.
Omalunga was allegedly found with two stick grenades on August 8, at Malera in Kumi district.
Prosecutor WO II Enock Odongo told the court that Olupot and Omalunga were arrested with three civilians, Luka Okello, 43, Hussein Emoit, 47 and Umaru Okello, all of Kumi.
Medi Ssemwogerere alias Kamadi, 42, of Ndejje Kanyanya, earlier acquitted of robbery and murder charges in the civilian courts, was among those charged.
