This Sunday will be the final wrap up of M-Net’s reality TV show Big Brother II. Like a TV soap opera that finally runs out of production, we shall forget all the incredible housemates and all the joy and excitement they brought to our lives. We might even have to miss the nauseating side. Whereas some housemates rocked, others sucked! Carol’s image will most likely be more permanently etched in our minds because she came to Uganda.
This Sunday October 13, we shall get to find out who of the three housemates left in the house — Puledi, Jackie and Richard, gets to win the hefty one million Rand prize in a glittering two-hour special, to be aired live on M-Net’s ‘Open Time’ slot and DStv Channel 37.
There were no nominations last weekend. All the three are considered finalists and it is up to the public to choose who of the trio is popular enough to win the money. If you are interested in voting for the winner, the Big Brother II voteline is on 27 82 288 2002 . You can also do it on the Big Brother web-site http://www.bigbrothersa.com.
Ten housemates entered the show’s camera and microphone-monitored house on July 28 this year, as the 78-day show kicked off. We have already watched several housemates leave, starting with pregnant Michelle Carstens who chose a voluntary exit. Then the evictions began and viewers said goodbye to Dominique, Thando, Groschaan, Carol, Zlatko, Ilse-Marie, Rabin and Mandy.
And whilst they departed, they each left a legacy, from Groschaan’s flamboyant clothing to Carol & Dominique’s nickname of the “Disapproving Sistersâ€. Then there was Mandy’s one-sided attraction to gentlemanly Andre, Ilse-Mari’s steamy relationships with Richard and Rabin and Thando’s reputed dislike of rugby-playing, sports-mad Puledi.
Meanwhile the tasks got harder and harder — who will forget the group elbow deep in soap suds as they tried to wash down hundreds of used crockery and cutlery. Then there was the House Arrest task; the Big Brother Games task; the Open Road task and the Bundu Bash task.
In season two, the show’s controversially famous “Shower Hour†continued and the broadcast was once again 24-hours live on DStv’s Channel 37 with special highlight programmes daily on M-Net.
The broadcast took a step further with the addition of the new psychological show HeadSpace. And the show’s presenters, the charming Mark Gilman and beautiful newcomer Zuraida Jardine were kept busy interviewing evicted housemates, their friends and family.
And as the housemates were evicted they met fans and friends of the show, with several evictees travelling the continent to meet viewers and Big Brother Club members. Carol Zuma besides visiting Uganda where she stirred up a media frenzy, jetted off to Tanzania, Ghana and Nigeria while Dominique Ashen visited Namibia and Zimbabwe. Thando Mkize also completed a trip to Kenya and Botswana while Rabbin Harduth is currently preparing for a tour of Malawi and Zambia.
But it all comes down to just one moment on Sunday when the winner will be announced. After 78 days, I would not miss the final announcement, live!
However, with the exit of Big Brother II comes another reality TV show that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Fear Factor which will be screened on M-Net Sundays is the African version of the international stunt-oriented series.
Three men and three women compete in three extreme stunts (daring physical feats or eating live worms), every week for the prize of R50,000 in South Africa.
